Ramdas Athawale (Ramdas Bandhu Athawale) was born on 25 December 1959. A former Lok Sabha member, he is a member of Rajya Sabha of Indian parliament and an active member of the Dalit community. He is the founder–leader of the Republican Party of India (A), an Ambedkarite party. Currently, he is Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment in the Narendra Modi government, and represents Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of India’s Parliament. Previously he was the Lok Sabha MP from Pandharpur.
Ramdas Athawale was a full-time member of Dalit Panther of India organisation which was founded by Namdeo Dhasal and J. V. Pawar. Athawale demanded firearms. for Dalits from Indian Government for self-defense and to resist oppression.
He was member of Maharashtra Legislative Council from 1990 to 1995 and position of Cabinet Minister for Employment Guarantee Scheme and Prohibition Propaganda, Social Welfare and Transport in the Government of Maharashtra.
He represented the Pandharpur constituency of Maharashtra and is the president of the Republican Party of India (Athawale) political party.
He was the representative of the Pandhapur constituency and held the position of the Republican Party of India. During the period, 1998-99, he also represented Mumbai North Central in the 12th Lok Sabha. After he lost the 2009 Lok Sabha election, in 2011 he left the NCP-congress alliance. He led the RPI party and associated himself with the Shivsena Bharatiya Janata Party and contested for Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections. Athawale was elected to Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Parliament in 2014 and represented Maharashtra. Currently he is the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Department.
Ramdas Athawale was born to Bandu Athawale and Honsabai Athawale in Agalgaon, Sangli district in Maharashtra. He is married to Seema Athawale and has son named Jeet. He is under graduate Educated at Siddharth College.
